Meet Jayme

Hi, I’m Jayme, the creator of Bougie Beets. I was born and raised in Lexington, KY, where the grass is green, and the city bleeds blue. My journey into veganism began in 2019 after a visit to a naturopath for sudden debilitating migraines. After undergoing blood work and examining my diet, I was recommended to try the paleo diet, which helped me eliminate dairy. That was the crucial step I needed to attempt a vegan diet for a month. Since that first month in June 2019, I’ve never looked back and have continued on this incredible vegan journey.

After the first year of being vegan, and now having a partner in crime who loves to cook, we’ve tried countless recipes to incorporate the foods we were brought up on and veganize them. The importance of being able to incorporate our own meals that we desire and making them taste like "home" cannot be overstated. We strive to create dishes that both bring nourishment and cater to giving our taste buds what we've had growing up. You don't have to deprive yourself of good food to be vegan. It's a pivot and adaptation, not a diet that you have to struggle through. I still enjoy creating southern-style dishes like biscuits and gravy and smothered fried chicken.

One thing that has always been important to me is maintaining a positive impact on my personal health. I get my blood work checked every year to ensure my body is getting all the necessary vitamins and nutrients it needs. My vitals are better than ever, and I believe it's very important to become your own advocate in your health. By monitoring what I put in my body and listening to its needs, I've found that it's easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle as a vegan with less processed foods and more whole foods.

When I’m not in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes, I enjoy hanging out with my daughter, Autumn, playing the piano, reading, volunteering in the community, making art, and maintaining my veggie garden. I’m also handy with tools and love building things for the house. I’m multi-talented, a jack of all trades. As I've gotten older, I've become more self-aware and I love my quirks. Social media has shown me that there are many people like me out there, making me feel part of many big communities.

My daughter, Autumn, who is 8 years old, often joins me in the kitchen and on our social media pages, making meals and sharing her own experiences. She brings a joyful and creative energy to everything we do, making our vegan journey even more special.

Meet John

My husband, John, is also a passionate vegan. Interestingly, we both started our vegan journeys separately in 2019 before finding each other. John is a cool, nerdy tech enthusiast who loves gadgets and has a knack for all things tech. Alongside his tech passions, John is also focused on fitness, ensuring that he maintains a healthy and active lifestyle. He loves to cook, and his favorite go-to meal is a breakfast tofu scramble.

John was born in California but raised in Arizona and considers himself a native at this point. His cooking often focuses on traditional Mexican-style dishes, reflecting his African American and Mexican heritage. Together, we have tried many different recipes to veganize the foods we were brought up on, blending my southern-style cooking with his Mexican influences.

Together, we host a podcast where we discuss various aspects of vegan living, from trying new food items and products to reviewing vegan experiences when we travel. We release two episodes a month. John’s insights and experiences add a unique perspective to our blog, and we love sharing our conversations with you.
